2026-10-16 - the irony of ai cloning
-----------------------

one can only wonder how this happened. the same companies which wanted to be at the top of the proclaimed new technology era are now the ones suffering the most. here's my hot take to this: ai cloned software is the amplified version of the open source movement.

When Richard Stallman and Linus Torvalds started hacking to build an alternative operating system, it was the first soft touch of reality for people like bill gates in those days which lived off proprietary software: if you can build it, you can copy it. thanks to an asenine cartell law, microsoft escaped with a black eye. the same company suing and producing everyone out of existence by copying it first and then outsell their competition by sheer budget of marketing, that very same company - and many others - will suffer from the god they made with their own hands.

these universal constructors (deus ex, anyone?) for software are starting to work against them. just a few years ago, they were mounting piles of (borrowed and still owed) money while designing the most sophisticated word completion apps on the planet, completely unaware that they were digging their own grave. and right when they thought, that now, now is the big moment when cash has to come in, right then, their own customers turned around: 'so, we can just create software with a prompt now?' - 'yes!' - 'anything we wish for?' - 'why, yes!' - 'including yours?' - 'ye... wait, no. no!!'

first casuality, adobe. the greed of the subscription model gathered a lot of hate in the hearts for millions of people, and now the very same people are cloning the software which brought adobe the cash piles they have. don't get me wrong - the clones are barely usable right now, and going forward, people will realise WHY software development is so hard. but the genie is out the bottle, and this time, they won't suing it back in.

it will lead to an interesting realisation: if your business model is relying on keeping secrets (like keeping the source code closed), you are doomed to fail. every secret will be solved eventually. for the very same reason, security by obscurity is the weakest form of security. the irony is, that the very same companies which relied on secrets, created a universal secret solver - they created the product which is about to, well, not really destroy them, but it will cost them. much.
